Algae are at the origin of plant life both in the sea and on land. 3.5 billion years ago, the first cyanobacteria made photosynthesis possible.
Over time, algae evolved, moving from microscopic forms to more complex and varied ones: the macroalgae.
We distinguish between red, green and brown algae. It was from the green algae lineage that the first land plants appeared.
The oxygen they produced was first stored in the oceans, before gradually reaching the atmosphere and making it breathable for future forms of life.
Today, 50% of the oxygen stored on our planet from that primary production comes from algae.
