Seaweed and biomaterials

Seaweed-based biomaterials are bio-sourced materials derived from macroalgae or microalgae. They stand out for their renewable character, their biodegradability and their functional properties.

Made for the most part from dried seaweed, from by-products of the processing factories or from surplus stranded seaweed, they serve as construction materials and insulation. Some designers and craftspeople, keen to work with low-carbon products, use them.

Still costly and produced in small quantities, these biomaterials prove that seaweed can be a solution for replacing certain petroleum-based plastics. Many experiments are under way to enable their development on a larger scale.
